The metallic shriek tore through the humid afternoon, a violent percussion that jolted our bodies forward and then snapped us back agat the worn leather seats. A wave of heat, smelling sharply of scorched rubber and anxious sweat, washed over us as the world outside the windshield shuddered and went still. His hand, which had been resting lightly on the gearshift, tinctively flew to my thigh, his grip not painful but possessively firm, a grounding pressure in the sudden, ringing silence. My own pulse hammered in my throat, a frantic rhythm that echoed the frantic thrumming of the stalled engine, a shared, intimate vibration between us. I turned my head slowly, the movement feeling impossibly deliberate, and found his eyes already locked on mine, dilated and dark with a startling mix of alarm and something far more primal. The air in the confined space grew thick, charged with the raw energy of the near-miss, every exhale a warm cloud that mingled with his, our breathing beginning to synchronize. The scent of his cologne, usually a faint whisper, was now a potent musk mingled with the adrenaline pouring from our pores, an intoxicating cocktail that made my head spin. His thumb began to move in a slow, deliberate circle on the sensitive skin of my inner leg, a silent question that sent a shiver arcing through my entire being, coiling deep within my core.
