His unfortunate subject was the vibrant and entirely capable Rose Monroe, a woman whose natural talent was utterly eclipsed by his obsessive need for control. Van Wylde’s methods were not those of a mentor but of a deranged puppeteer, forcing Rose into a series of increasingly absurd and humiliating scenarios he deemed “character-building.” Each meticulously staged scene felt more artificial than the last, draining every ounce of authenticity from Rose’s otherwise compelling presence.
