The entire evening had been orchestrated as a perfect Valentine’s Day surprise, a romantic tableau set against the soft glow of candlelight. My date, Layton Benton, arrived with a smile that didn’t quite reach her unnervingly calm eyes, her presence both captivating and subtly unsettling. Our conversation was pleasant, yet a strange tension began to coil in the air, thick and unspoken. It was then that I first heard the name, a ghostly whisper carried on a draft from the air vent, “Ricky Spanish.” Layton’s placid expression fractured for a mere second, a flicker of profound irritation crossing her features before the serene mask slipped back into place. The whispers persisted, a haunting, sibilant echo that seemed to emanate from the very walls, relentlessly repeating that cursed name. I watched, horrified, as Layton’s perfectly manicured hand tightened around her wine glass, her knuckles turning a stark white against the crystal. The gentle piano music from the restaurant’s speaker warped, ever so slightly, into a dissonant, jarring chord that raised the hairs on my arms. With a sudden, violent motion, she slammed her fist on the table, her composure shattering as she screamed, “I told you never to mention him!” into the empty space beside her. I sat frozen, realizing this was no romantic dinner, but a chilling descent into a shared delusion from which I was utterly excluded. The candles flickered out, leaving me alone in the dark with the echoing specter of Ricky Spanish and the terrifying stranger he had awakened in Layton Benton.
