The frantic scratching at the back door was the first sign that this was not going to be a normal afternoon for Jordan Ash. He rushed into the kitchen to find his girlfriend, Amy Brooke, standing on a chair, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and utter disbelief. A tiny, fluffy squirrel, having somehow breached their suburban fortress, was now ricocheting off the walls with chaotic, panicked energy. “Don’t just stand there,” Amy shrieked, pointing a trembling finger as the creature launched a ceramic vase from the counter with a single, surprisingly powerful flick of its tail. Jordan, armed with nothing but a flimsy oven mitt and a profound sense of inadequacy, attempted to corral the furry intruder toward an open window. The squirrel, however, interpreted this as an invitation for an exhilarating game of tag, zipping between his legs and up the curtains with dizzying speed. Amy’s screams reached a new, piercing octave as it skittered across the top of the refrigerator, sending a box of cereal raining down like confetti. In a moment of desperate inspiration, Jordan managed to fling a large, woven blanket over the creature, momentarily halting its destructive rampage. He carefully bundled the now-struggling lump, feeling its tiny heart hammering against his palms as he carried it toward freedom. With a final, triumphant heave, he released the squirrel back into the oak tree from whence it came, watching it vanish into the leaves. Exhausted, he turned back to see Amy still perched on her chair, surveying the wreckage of their kitchen with a look that promised a very long, and very detailed, conversation about home security.
