The fluorescent lights of the hospital’s break room hummed overhead, casting a sterile glow on the chaotic scene that had just unfolded. Rion King, the usually unflappable charge nurse, stared in disbelief at the syrupy puddle spreading across the linoleum floor. It had begun when Jessica Starling, a brilliant but perpetually flustered new grad, had tripped while carrying a tray of discarded juice cups. Her shriek of surprise caused Jasmine Wilde, who was meticulously charting at the small table, to jump and send her own full can of soda flying into the air. The carbonated spray arced dramatically, drenching the front of Jazlyn Ray’s freshly laundered scrubs as she walked in, her mouth dropping open in silent horror. A thick, cherry-red syrup now clung to Rion’s expensive sneakers, creating a vacuum-like seal with the tile. Jasmine’s paperwork was a sodden, unreadable mess of ink and sticky droplets, while Jessica simply sat on the floor, covered in a rainbow of sugary liquids. The cloying, fruity scent of a dozen different drinks mixed nauseatingly with the room’s usual aroma of antiseptic and stale coffee. For a long, heavy moment, the four nurses stood frozen in their shared, ridiculous predicament, a monument to a shift gone terribly wrong. Then, a single, stifled giggle from Jazlyn broke the tension, and the entire room erupted into helpless, exhausted laughter.
