Jasmine James, her knuckles white where she gripped the dashboard, scanned the impenetrable wall of pine and shadow just beyond the reach of the headlights. They were miles from the nearest town, drawn by a local legend whispered in the town’s only bar about a phantom cougar that stalked these woods. Chris killed the engine, and the ensuing silence was absolute, a physical weight pressing in on them from all sides. Jasmine’s breath hitched as a twig snapped somewhere in the profound darkness, a sound as sharp and sudden as a gunshot. Chris reached for the heavy-duty flashlight, its beam cutting a frantic, shaky path through the undergrowth, illuminating nothing but dripping ferns and gnarled oak trees. Then, from a ridge directly above them, a low, guttural growl rumbled through the very frame of the truck, a sound of pure, primal menace.
