Surgical steel gleamed under the lights as the patient was wheeled into the operating room. The anesthesiologist’s cool fingers brushed agat her cheek, and she felt a shiver run down her spine. She tried to speak, but no sound came out; her throat was dry and tight. As the surgeon made the first incision, she closed her eyes and prayed that this would be over soon. The smell of antiseptic filled her nostrils as the team worked in silence, their movements fluid and precise. She felt as though they were operating on someone else, a stranger whose body was foreign to hers. And then it was done, and she was wheeled away, still unconscious but relieved that the pain was over.
