The sun beat down on the equatorial rainforest, a humid blanket that clung to our small research team as we followed the legendary biologist, Dr. Jonathan “Johnny” Sins, deeper into the emerald unknown. This expedition, funded by a reclusive tech magnate, was already being called biology’s wildest field trip for its ambitious, almost fantastical, goal. Dr. Sins, his bald head glistening with sweat and his muscular frame moving with a predator’s grace, suddenly halted, raising a calloused hand for silence. Our audio engineer, the brilliant but notoriously skittish Diamond Kitty, adjusted her sensitive parabolic microphone, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fascination. A low, resonant thrumming began to vibrate through the very air, a sound that seemed to emanate from the gargantuan, bioluminescent fungi clinging to the ancient trees.
